It would seem that the best way of shipping a boat across an ocean would be inside a shipping container, which has an inside width of 7'8". total length would probably be either 19' or 39', for 20' anf 40' containers. In the idea design section of this site is Evintide with an 8' beam and a narrow boat with a 6'10" beam. In both it is stated that they are really built by the foot, by just adding length to the middle of the boat. Questions I have about this concept are, given that an extended waterline makes a hull more effecient, would the motor size have to increase as the boat gets longer? What sort of diesel horsepower would be about right for this model? What would be involved in adding an extra section in the middle (plywood construction)? Would this type be suitable for crossing say the English channel in good weather? How much length would be taken in the ends before you are just adding usable compartment lengths?
