Well, I found some published support about your concept of diagonals bieng an indicator of performance in "The Common Sense of Yacht Design". However, I also noticed that Ted Brewer supports Chappelle in his view on short rounded buttock lines. While adding; "such craft maybe prone to dragging a large quater wave which adds considerable extra resistance, and their short, narrow ends may lack reserve buoyancy and so being subject to pooping in extreme conditions.(p.34) He then provides two contrasting examples, Perry's Valiant and Hanna's Tahiti Ketch. Perry's aft end being considerabley fuller. I would imagine one could make a similar comparison wih Aage Nielsen's Northern Crown and Atkin's Eric. It also seems that Chappelle may get into these differing theories more thoroughly in his book "the search for speed under sail". Until then I will just have to wait, for it seems there is nothing new under the sun in these matters.
