You have to be pretty careful about terminology here. What it says about “Farthing” is that her HULL speed is 4.4 knots. That is this is the speed at which the wave produced by the hull’s passage is the same length as the vessel’s waterline. Most sailing vessels of really top design can somewhat exceed hull speed off the wind in just the right conditions. If you have a hull with an 8’ waterline “hull speed” will be 3.8 knots. So it is not surprising that under certain circumstances both boats may go a little faster than these speeds. The “Coin Collection” types will average around hull speed in a trade wind passage. In the variables they will average around 25% slower. I hope this clears things up.
