Biography of the artist -- Nannette Michaud MacNaughton

The artist stretching canvas

Born in Detroit, Michigan to a musician father and a mother who paints, I began sketching and painting at an early age. Some of my fondest childhood memories were the few summers we spent in Maine. During one of those summers I met and later married my husband Tom, a yacht designer and native of Maine.

For seventeen years I sailed the East Coast of the United States and the Bahamas with Tom and our young daughter Heather. Our return to Maine in 1989 provided new inspiration for a series of paintings on the Down East Coast and specifically the Eastport area. I place special emphasis on techniques of water, sky and light. These are drawn from my years of living aboard boats in close contact with the environment.

I am a self-taught artist learning as I go from observing others I admire and by reading and collecting art books. I delight in the simple beauty of the world and feel compelled to record it in paint. It is often said that artists paints for themselves. For me, no amount of personal satisfaction with a completed painting compares with the pleasure the work gives to others.
